There are a ton of apps that can promise free Wi-Fi. You can even find folks on sketchy sites that promise to provide free coverage from a certified service provider. Other options include lower cost service. Say for example, T-Mobile charges 30 dollars a month for a particular plan. These guys are going to offer that same plan at 20 dollars. All of those things that you see out there are most likely a fraud! So, with that being said, is there a true app for free Wi-Fi? We’ve actually found one that truly works and we can’t wait to share it with you. Don’t worry it won’t be long before we’re talking about the specific app.
Here’s the issue though, at least with the app that we know works. You’ve got to move to a spot to be able to get Wi-Fi. Would it make sense then to scramble to find other options that claim they provide free coverage? Here’s the big issue that we’ve found. Even if one of the apps out there on the web was able to provide free coverage for you, to be able to get there you’d be looking at a couple of failed attempts. It only takes one wrong download to put all of the personal information that you have on your phone at risk! We’re going to go over what type of risks you can take to look for an app to provide free Wi-Fi. First though, let’s get right to what we know works!
App For Free WiFi: WiFi Map TripBox
This is the app that we’ve tried and tested, and we know it works. In fact, we pretty much figured out that the app really worked without even having to drive out to a location to get the free Wi-Fi. We knew it worked because the app pointed out free Wi-Fi locations in our hometown that we knew for a fact already existed. Even though we’d been living there for years there were more than a few locations that it pointed out which we had no idea existed. Here’s a little bit more info on how the app really works.
What this app does is that it points out different spots throughout a city where free Wi-Fi is being offered. Some of the spots are essentially the usual suspects. City squares, public parks, and even some coffee shops and other types of venues show up on these lists. From what we were able to gather we believe that the app is fed by users. Therefore, the hotspots that you find there are going to be places that people have found offer this free service. There are certainly a couple of drawbacks to this app. It’s not that we necessarily want to play devil’s advocate. However, there are things that you should know before you put all of your faith behind this app!
As with any app you need to make sure that you have an internet connection to be able to use it. That’s certainly a main drawback. However, to be honest this is an issue that you’re going to be facing with other apps as well. Especially things like map apps that are able to provide information as you go along. Naturally to be able to provide that information you need an internet connection. What you can do though is create a list of places that offer free wifi before you leave a spot where you do have coverage.
Will It Work Anywhere?
Naturally it’s not an app that has the global presence of something like Google Maps. Quite frankly this is an app that could quickly go out of business if a map app like Waze or even Google Maps offer this opportunity to users. To literally map out each city in the world and point out where folks can find free Wi-Fi. We’ve actually tested the app in multiple cities throughout the world. It says for example that it has some type of reach in China! With most of these apps though there are certain countries where you can almost always bet you won’t be able to use them properly. China is certainly one of those countries.
If we are talking about some of the main cities across Europe or the United States you’re not going to have a problem getting it to work. Even in some of the more remote cities in these countries you can expect pretty decent performance from this particular app. We’ve talked about some of the limitations that this app has. There are a couple of ways around them. In most cities you’re going to get free Wi-Fi in or near important tourist spots for example. So you can very well map out the city before you leave a hotel and get to those Wi-Fi spots throughout the day.
Is There an App To Get Coverage Everywhere?
To put it simply, we haven’t found it. We intend to keep looking for it for sure. The thing is if such an app existed it would have to be a super underground bootleg type of operation. For example, in Mexico there’s a cartel that took over some of the Nextel cell towers. So they’ve essentially built their own cell network, which they use for free! Talk about a way to make sure that your data doesn’t end up in the hands of Mark Zuckerberg or the guys from Google. As you can see though the only feasible option is to connect to a network that is run by an organized crime syndicate. Not exactly a great idea. We’re sure there’s a group of friendly nerds who could create their network. That’s just the type of app we’re looking for!
App For Free Wi-Fi – How To Look For One
Do you want to launch your own search for an app with free service? Here are a couple of tips and tricks that we would recommend if you were going to try such a thing. Essentially we are recommending that you not try it. If you’re keen to find an app with free coverage everywhere provided that one exists, here are a couple of things that you should be on the lookout for.
Getting An Official App From App Store/ Play Store
Ideally if you find such an app it would have to have a certified download page from the App store or Google Play Store. Granted, if you wanted to look for something totally off the grid you’re thinking should be the opposite. However, looking for apps outside of certified download pages is a risky business. At least the apps that are on these stores have been somewhat screened. We would certainly say that you find a lot less spam software in official app stores these days. That has also seen game emulators dropped from these app stores, but that’s a topic for a different day!
Do The Search On A Burner Phone
If you are going to try and test your luck outside of the regular app stores the best thing that you can do is conduct the search through a burner phone. If you download an app that is a total scam then in the worst case scenario you can just restore the phone to default settings. There’s essentially no data that can be stolen from that phone. As long as you don’t log into your Google account or anything like that on that phone. Potentially if you find an app that works and that you feel comfortable with after testing it on that phone you can download it on your regular phone.
Beware of Raving Reviews!
We are potentially shooting ourselves in the foot here with what we are about to say. Particularly because we praise Wi-Fi Map TripBox. That being said, a lot of sites are going to promote different apps that could potentially be a total fraud. The one thing that we liked about the app that we are in a sense championing is that you can actually find real listings of working Wi-Fi spots without having to download the app. They do give you the typical if you want more download the app. You are going to have access though to around 5 search results or more just through the webpage!
Things To Be Careful With When Surfing With Public Wi-Fi
There are definitely things that you are going to want to be careful about when you’re using a public network. Since we are providing you with an option for an app for free Wi-Fi we wanted to make sure we gave out a couple of warnings as well. Really we would say to be smart about the things that you do on a public network. You don’t want to be doing things like making payments on a public network. Hey, does booking an Uber on a public Wi-Fi network count? You are making a payment, and you are accessing an app that has quite a bit of personal information. So believe it or not you could be at risk.
You would think that you can trust most of the major apps to take care of you when you’re on one of these networks. To be honest 99% of the time you’re going to be just fine. You don’t want to be too paranoid about using a public network. The biggest problem though is that it can only take one wrong step to literally put all of your personal data out there. There are a couple of things that you can do to keep yourself even safer.
Oh, The Trusted VPNs
We don’t talk too much about VPNs. Mainly because we feel that information about these is everywhere. Quite frankly, unlike pretty much every YouTube channel on the planet we don’t make money from these companies. Therefore, more often than not we’ve avoided talking about these. Just because it feels like we are spamming you. Here though we are not going to champion any particular VPN network. What we are going to say is that you could look for one that you can activate in public Wi-Fi networks.
From what we know a lot of the popular and even not so popular VPN networks have a feature that is meant to be turned on when you are surfing the web on public networks. All in all, having that extra layer of protection usually can’t hurt. We are not saying that you should just throw all of your precautions out the window when you’re in a public network with a VPN. It’s still a good idea to maybe not access some apps or places where you happen to keep very sensitive data. In an effort to avoid all sorts of data fraud.
App For Free Wi-Fi Conclusion
Do these apps work or not? As with anything, there are apps that work and there are apps that don’t. When it comes to free Wi-Fi locators those apps are more likely to work than something that’s going to give you free coverage out of nowhere. With these locators, you are just pointing out the areas where someone is deliberately giving out Wi-Fi so to speak. More often than not the people that are giving out free Wi-Fi happen to be the local government and things like that. So essentially these locations are places where they want you to go. You’re not stealing anything in this case.
If you were to find an app that was able to provide you with free Wi-Fi no matter where you were, that concept is completely different. That would mean that someone is letting you into a wireless network. More often than not that would mean that some type of illegal operation is going on. That’s really why you need to be very careful if you’re looking for something like this. The odds are you’re not going to find a free wireless service anywhere. That’s just a fact. However, free Wi-Fi spots are actually becoming more and more popular.
